In elementary school,Tommy's art teacher, Colleen Reitzner, taught students how to make dream catchers. He continued making them and would hang them above his bed to "keep the bad dreams away". Some people also believe the dream catcher helps people reach their goals. The web catches the good ideas/dreams and the bad ones pass through. The good dreams are held in the webbing until the light of day when they are passed to the mind of the sleeper who can then "follow his dreams".
